99 MW Cape Scott Wind project begins commercial operation

GDF SUEZ Canada Inc. has announced the 99 MW Cape Scott wind power project on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, entered commercial operation under a 20-year power purchase agreement with BC Hydro.
Located about 40 kilometers west of Port Hardy within the traditional territories of the Kwakiutl, Quatsino, and Tlatlasikwala First Nations and outside of Cape Scott Provincial Park, the CDN $325 million wind project has the capacity to generate over 290 gigawatt-hours of clean, renewable energy annually, enough to meet the electricity needs of approximately 100,000 British Columbians.
The Cape Scott project created more than 300 construction jobs during peak construction and 12 permanent operating and maintenance positions. Since the start of construction in the summer of 2011, the project infused more than $51 million into the local economy.
With the addition of the Cape Scott Wind Project, GDF SUEZ Canada and partners Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Fiera Axium Infrastructure currently operate 660 MW of wind-powered generation facilities in the Canadian Maritimes, Ontario, and British Columbia and have a growing solar portfolio. Cape Scott is the joint venture's tenth wind installation in Canada.

GDF SUEZ Canada's President Mike Crawley, remarked, "The Cape Scott Wind Project represents a significant engineering feat and strengthens our position as one of the leading renewable energy generators in Canada.  We're proud to continue demonstrating our commitment to environmentally sound power generation within a province that shares this priority."
Named "Project of the Year" by Clean Energy British Columbia in late 2013, the Cape Scott wind site features 55 Vestas V100 turbines each with 1.8MW of capacity. 3 Nations Construction Ltd., a joint venture created by the Kwakiutl, Quatsino, and Tlatlasikwala First Nations, and Lemare Group, constructed a large part of the project's roads and earthworks.

SLT wins ‘Sri Lanka National Energy Efficiency Awards 2013’

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the national telecommunication service provider, was the proud recipient of a Merit Certificate at the Sri Lanka National Energy Efficiency Awards (SLNEEA) organized by Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy.  The company is the only telecommunication service provider to win an award this year.
The SLNEEA 2013 was organized on a grand scale at the BMICH, to coincide with the inauguration of Vidulka 2013, the Energy Exhibition. Niranjana Bandula Seneviratne, DGM / Power & AC of SLT received the certificate on behalf of SLT PLC from Hon. Prime Minister, D.M. Jayaratne. The event was also patronized by the Susil Premajayantha - Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy, the A.M Abdul Carder - Deputy Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy, B.M.U.D Basnayake – the Secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy, Prasad Galhena, the Chairman, Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority and Dr. Thusitha Sugathapala – the Director General, Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority.
This award is a prestigious national award that encourages, evaluates and rewards excellence in energy management and energy conservation systems within entire organizations, as opposed to focusing on specific individual projects. The award recognizes and rewards energy efficiency across a broad range of industry sectors including manufacturing, healthcare and services (which include hotels, commercial buildings and state sector office buildings). Applications are reviewed via a five stage process and applicants are evaluated on seven different criteria including management commitment to energy management, employee awareness and training, financial commitments (investments), planning / monitoring / evaluating / reporting, energy performance, increase of renewable energy share in the energy source portfolio and other non-energy outcomes including quality enhancements, waste reduction, customer satisfaction and green image etc.  “We are proud of this achievement, which is a first step to becoming a more green organization,” said Priyantha Fernandez, Chief Network Officer of SLT, giving his views on the award received by SLT.  “We have always been environmentally focused and as a large corporate entity, we believe it is our responsibility to ensure that our business is conducted with minimum negative impacts on the environment and effectively minimize the carbon footprint. With the appointment of an energy ambassador and energy management council, we aggressively went about implementing energy management activities to meet our energy targets. Awareness programmes were carried out in SLT Offices Island wide to educate and encourage employees on energy conservation and management.”
